The first swimmers that aren’t fish: three turtles and a stroke to carry them
The world’s water is only a few weeks old, and until this week everything alive in it was a fish. Now three turtles swim there: an ambush hunter that barely moves, a generalist that hunts nothing at all, and a scavenger that lives off the dead. They are the first swimmers here that aren’t fish, and a shell turned out to need a stroke of its own.
When the first cold-blooded animals arrived we wrote down what we were leaving out: turtles, frogs and salamanders wanted standing water, and the world had none yet, so they waited. The water came at the start of July. This is that debt being paid.
Three turtles, and only one hunter
The mata-mata, twelve kilograms, is the batch’s single predator, and about as undramatic a predator as this world holds: it settles on the bed and takes what drifts past, minnow and rudd. The pig-nosed turtle is the heaviest of the three at twenty kilograms, and the most aquatic freshwater turtle there is, the only one with true flippers instead of webbed feet. It forages a little of everything and hunts nothing whatsoever. The common snapping turtle, eleven kilograms, takes carrion as readily as live food, so here it feeds through the world’s existing loop of bodies breaking down into ground.
One predator was the deliberate ceiling. The water already holds a complete three-link chain that answers only to itself, and three new hunters dropped into it would have shoved that web around before anyone had watched it settle. A predator, a neutral body and a cleaner is the widest reach we could take without adding a new apex or a new rule of ecology.
Each turtle declares a mass, a diet and how sociable it is, and everything else falls out, which is the same contract every animal here is written under. With the three in, the roster went from fifty-six kinds of animal to fifty-nine, and the reptiles from eight to eleven, past the six-to-eight the design had sketched. We would rather fill a named gap than hit a species count.
A flipper is not a leg
The awkward question arrived before any of the three had a body. The part of the world that draws a walking animal treats a leg as a column: something that reaches down to the ground and gets refilled to it, however the terrain rises. File a flipper as a leg and the world dutifully tries to stand a turtle up on the lakebed.
So flippers went in with fins and wings instead. That one call put turtles into a bracket that already held every fish and every snake in the world: animals with no walking anatomy to grade. There is a check that reads the footfalls of everything that walks, insisting that a foot never strides past the chest or the rump and that same-side legs pace together, and it now steps over a turtle for precisely the reason it steps over a pike. The turtle’s own description says as much in plain words, so the exemption reads as a decision rather than an oversight.
In this world a leg is a thing that reaches the ground. A flipper only pushes water.
Which leaves the door open in the right direction. A land tortoise, when one comes, gets four real legs, walks on them, and falls straight back under those same footfall checks. The exemption belongs to the water, not to the shell.
The seventh way to move
A shell can bend neither of the ways the water already understood. A fish flexes side to side; a snake ripples along its length; a rigid dome does neither. Until this week the world had six ways a body could carry itself: walking, hopping, flapping, slithering, swimming, and one owl that only turns its head. The paddle is the seventh.
Front and rear flippers beat out of phase. The front pair sweeps down and back, pulling, while the rear pair lifts up and forward to recover, and then they trade. That coupling is the whole difference between a paddle and a flap. The stroke is also deliberately vertical: at the tip of a flipper it travels twice as far up and down as it does fore and aft, two blocks against one, which is what reads as rowing rather than flying underwater.
Nothing else on the animal moves. The shell holds still, the flat underside holds still, the neck and head and eyes hold still. Every bit of life in a swimming turtle is in four limbs, and that stillness is most of why it reads as a shelled thing rather than a fish wearing a hat.

The detail we argued over longest was the hinge. A flipper’s movement scales with how far out along it you are: nothing at all where the limb meets the shell, full travel at the tip. Skip that and the flipper tears a little away from the body on every stroke, a hairline gap opening and closing all day. It took two passes to get right, and it changed the arithmetic underneath. Each finished body runs to somewhere between two hundred and sixty and three hundred blocks: a domed shell over a flat belly, a short neck, a head, two eyes, four flippers, no tail.
Counting who actually arrives
Then we grew a temperate world and counted. All nine water-dwelling species placed: a hundred and twelve founders spread across roughly eighteen thousand seven hundred cells of open water. Sixty-three minnow, ten perch, seven pike, six rudd, four carp, three eel. Ten mata-mata, five snapping turtles, four pig-nosed.
Sparse but present is the right shape for a large ranging body. A turtle’s crowding is capped by how much room an animal that size needs, not by how much forage the ground beneath it can grow, which is the same reasoning that keeps a big hunter rare, and it sidesteps two ways a grazing population is known to fall over here.
We also grew the same world with the water switched off. Nine hundred and fifty-one land founders placed, and not one aquatic animal. That second run is the part worth having: a check that can only ever come back green has proved nothing at all.
This is a census of who arrives. It is not yet a verdict on whether the pond settles.
The frame we gave up
Twenty more animals at world start is not free. The founding population of a world went from five hundred and sixty-eight to five hundred and eighty-eight, about three and a half percent more, and the heaviest test scene we keep had exactly one frame of headroom to spare. It spent it: thirty-four frames a second down to thirty-two or thirty-three, against a floor of thirty-three.
The fix on offer was to seed fewer turtles. We turned it down. Shrinking how thickly an animal lives so that a performance number goes green is deciding the ecology backwards, and an accurate record is worth more to us than a passing one. For scale, the build we actually ship runs about a third faster than the machine that floor is measured on, which would put the same scene near forty-three. The floor stays where it is. So does the failing number.
One piece is still owed. A shell ought to cost a swimmer speed, and the rule that turns a body’s weight into a pace does not know that yet, so these three currently cross a pond at exactly the speed their size implies. Nobody has written the penalty. It is named, deferred, and a later call. Until then the water holds something it has never held before: a body that is not a fish, four flippers turning in opposite pairs beneath a shell that never moves at all, going a shade faster than it should.
