The frogs that had to wait for damp ground
Batch after batch of animals closed with the same line in the notes: amphibians, still waiting. The bodies were never the hard part. A frog’s whole life is an argument with dryness, and this world had no way to say where the ground was damp — so the frogs waited until it could.
By the eleventh of July the roster stood at forty-four species, and it had grown around a hole. The lizards and snakes went in, then the constrictors, then the birds, and every closing note named the same groups left over — the reptiles went in without them. Fish got their answer when the world gained water and the placement rule learned to ask whether a cell was deep enough to swim in. Amphibians needed a different question, and nobody had written it.
A world that knew climate but not damp
Where a land animal can live has always been settled by two things: the kind of country it is standing in, and how much there is to eat there. Both are read live off the ground, which is why a valley that greens up holds more animals than one gone bare. Neither says anything at all about water in the soil.
So the world could tell a warm wet region from a cold dry one, and after early July it could tell a lake from a shore. Between those two scales, at the size of a bank or a hollow or a seep, it had nothing to say. That middle scale is the only one a frog cares about. Put one in a warm wet region and you have said something true and far too coarse; the difference between a mossy hollow and the dry rise above it is the whole of a frog’s world.
Which wetness?
Two kinds of wetness already existed here, and choosing between them was the real decision.
One is alive. The soil carries its own moisture, damper in spring and drier in high summer; the plants read it, and so does everything rotting back into the ground. The other never moves at all. It falls out of the world’s own shape: the moisture channel the terrain is grown from, plus the baseline wetness each kind of country carries. It reads the same on a world’s first morning as on its last.
We gave the frogs the one that never moves.
Where a frog can live should be a fact about the place, not about whether it rained there this morning.
Living soil moisture is weather, and weather is a thing that happened while you were watching. Hang a population off it and you have hung it off the clock, and off wherever your camera has been, since this world only runs the fine detail near you. We have chased that particular ghost before. Reading the world’s fixed shape instead means two worlds grown from the same seed agree about where the frogs are, for good. The reading is also frozen for the length of each update pass, so every animal weighed in one sweep sees the same world rather than one shifting underneath the count.
The rule itself is a new term on an old sum. What a patch of ground can support already leans on its forage and its soil; for amphibians, and only for amphibians, it now leans on dampness too. A species carries a marker saying it cares about damp ground, and anything without that marker never touches the new branch. The fish had already taught the placement rule to ask “is this open water?”, and that was their arrival; asking “how damp is this?” was threaded through the same seam rather than built alongside it.

Four frogs, wet end to dry
Then the animals. A goliath frog at 3.3 kilograms, the largest frog alive and the wettest-living of the four. An African bullfrog at 1.4, straddling wet and dry. A cane toad at 1.0, in the middle. A Sonoran desert toad at 0.9 as the dry bookend, at home in country that only turns green with the monsoon.
They were chosen to span that gradient rather than to land on a population figure. Each one is written as description and nothing else: a body mass, the kinds of country it favours, where it sits in the food chain. The world derives the rest, and no new simulation code went in beside them. Four species took the amphibian group from empty to full on its first delivery and carried the roster from forty-four to forty-eight.
We amended the plan to make room. What had been a single band for reptiles and amphibians together became two, a reptile band and an amphibian band of three to four species, because a frog and a lizard want different things from the ground they stand on.
They did need one thing the world had never built. Every species already moved the way its body should, and every one of them walked on four legs; a frog animated as a squat four-legged walker reads as a lizard with poor posture. We could have shipped that and moved on. We gave them a squat, tailless body and a true hop instead — the first hopping gait this world has had.

They wade rather than swim, and that limit arrived the same day from a separate piece of work that stopped land animals strolling across flooded lakebeds and let each animal’s own body set how deep it will go. A frog works the shallow fringe, which is where a frog belongs.
What we left out, and wrote down
An adult frog eats insects. Ours sit on the plant-eating tier, with local plant growth standing in for an invertebrate food base the roster did not have on the day they went in; the insects arrived the day after. There are no tadpoles either: no metamorphosis, and no rule that a frog must breed near water. That is a larger piece of work with its own name in the plan, and faking it in an afternoon would have been worse than leaving the gap visible.
The far country has a gap too. The parts of the world too distant to simulate animal by animal, the ones kept as populations instead, do not feel damp ground at all yet. At the world sizes shipping today that changes nothing. On larger worlds it will, so it went into the notes as owed rather than out of them as forgotten.
The dial we chose not to turn
The strength of the damp preference, how hard a dry place should press on an amphibian, ships at a setting where it provably does nothing. The frogs place and live like any other land animal. Damp ground does not yet raise or lower how many of them a patch can hold.
That was deliberate, and the reason is arithmetic. The world already presses hard on any creature living outside the country it favours. Stack an unmeasured dryness penalty on top of a penalty that heavy and the likely result is not that frogs prefer wet ground but that frogs are nowhere — a species quietly excluded from every world by a number nobody checked. So the machinery went in complete and inert.
A viability check settled the rest. Dropped into generated worlds, all four species place in the wet and dry country they should and in none they shouldn’t; a medium temperate world comes back with zero amphibians, which is exactly right for a cast of warm-wet and desert specialists. The mechanism works end to end. It is waiting on a hand, not on more code.
Turning it up is its own step, and the shape of that step is already agreed: sample real generated terrain, see what the dampness readings actually say about it, then tune toward how the world should feel rather than toward a number that can be defended afterwards. As of late July the dial has not moved.
Four days after the frogs went in, the world stopped being one climate at a time — the first ground this world has ever had that a frog could read as somewhere to be, and somewhere to avoid.
