The first oak that made an oak
The canopy in The Long Watch was designed to renew itself: old oaks fall, new ones take root, and a forest ages instead of simply shrinking. For a long stretch that promise didn’t hold — an oak could drop acorns every autumn of its life and never raise a second oak from any of them. A purpose-built count finally proved the promise true: more than a thousand seedlings, from five parents, in a single spring.
Getting there meant closing two separate gaps that had nothing to do with each other, and then building a way to actually watch a seed’s whole path, from falling to sprouting.
A seed that learns to wait
Oak sheds its acorns in autumn. An oak seedling can only take root in spring. For a long time The Long Watch checked both facts at the same instant a seed landed, so every acorn any oak, pine, or hazel ever dropped was thrown out on the spot, a defect deep enough that a canopy could only ever be as full as however it was first planted, never more. The fix was a seed bank: a seed that can’t sprout the moment it lands now waits underground instead, unseen, until its species’ season for sprouting comes back around.
A tree that needs time to become a parent
The seed bank solved half of it. Building it also surfaced a second, unrelated reason oak and hazel weren’t setting seed at all: a mature deciduous tree was being pushed toward its end at the very first autumn it saw, with no check on how long it had actually stood mature. A tree could be forced into decline before it was ever old enough to have dropped a single seed — and once that turn started, there was no coming back from it.
The fix was an age gate: a deciduous tree now has to have stood mature for a while before autumn is allowed to start pushing it toward death. It sounds like a modest change to one tree’s calendar. Left unfixed, though, it would have meant a working seed bank had almost nothing to catch. Most oaks would have died having never had the chance to drop a seed at all.
Counting every acorn
Both fixes together suggested the path should work now. They didn’t prove it did. So a one-off instrument was built for exactly this question: run a stand of mature oak parents through a full autumn, winter, and spring, and count what became of every acorn they dropped.
Checked the old way, every single acorn failed — oak’s autumn dispersal and its spring germination never once shared a moment on the calendar, so a straight landing check could never say yes. With the seed bank switched on, the same five parents produced 1,176 seedlings the following spring, and every one of them arrived by the same route: held underground through the winter, then released by the ground once its season turned.

A forest that has aged was the goal from the start. This is the first season an oak in The Long Watch actually managed it — grew, dropped seed, and watched that seed become a tree of its own.
What the count doesn’t claim
The same instrument was careful about what it hadn’t shown. Of the acorns tested, roughly three in four failed purely on timing — landed outside their species’ germination window — and even with both fixes in place, a mature oak still spends only a small share of its life able to release seed at all. Most oaks, in most years, still won’t get the chance.
And the count only followed a seed as far as sprouting. Whether those 1,176 seedlings grow up to become oaks in turn, mature and fertile and dropping acorns of their own, is a longer question — one that needs a much longer watch to answer.
What changed this season isn’t that oaks are suddenly common, or that a Long Watch forest’s canopy is settled for good. It’s that a fallen acorn finally has somewhere to go besides gone — a place to wait, a season to answer to, and, for five parents this spring, more than a thousand seedlings to show for it.
